    Welcome to Zeyawgub Consultancy

    Who is Zeyawgub?

My name is Deborah Belyea and I am the founder of Zeyawgub Consultancy.

I am a proud Torres Strait Islander woman of the Samuawgadhalgal people who descend from the Guda Maluilgal people of the Top Western Islands of the Torres Strait. My roots also extend to the Dhoeybaw clan of Dauan, and the Bamaga-Saibai people of Cape York Peninsula.

Zeyawgub (zay-ow-goob) is the Southern Wind that belongs to the Samuawgadhalgal people, and is essential in informing my cultural identity.

I have a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts), Bachelor of Education (Secondary, Humanities) and a Master of Social Studies (majoring in Indigenous Studies) and bring to Zeyawgub’s services an extensive knowledge set. My teaching career spans over 20 years, as a: classroom teacher, Head of Department (English and Humanities) and Head of Curriculum (Language and Culture), in school settings in remote Indigenous Australian communities and regional Queensland. I have also taught online at universities across New South Wales.

As an artist, my art work has appeared in numerous exhibitions from the Brisbane Power House through to Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island. I have also been commissioned for corporate artworks, such as for 'The Perfect Pearl' for the Torres Strait Regional Authority's 30th Anniversary Celebrations and digital artwork, Muy Ngulayg (Inner Knowledge) for NITV's Indigenous Australian content.

Most recently, I was awarded the winner of the 2024 National NAIDOC Poster competition with my piece, Urapun Muy (One Fire). https://www.naidoc.org.au/

    Why Zeyawgub?

With Zeyawgub, you are guaranteed professional, culturally authentic, respectful and responsive educational services.

My content creation draws on my experience, as I work with individuals, organisations and institutions to create culturally responsive learning opportunities for staff and students.

Additionally, I have also created workshops on 'Cultural Capabilities' (for government sectors and schools), 'Embedding First Nations Perspectives in the Curriculum', 'Cultural Responsiveness' and 'An Introduction to the Interconnectedness Holistic Framework (Torres Strait Islander Identity) Pedagogical Approach'. This approach is a great curriculum resource for students as well as a holistic approach that can be adopted by other sectors.

You can also go to spotify to listen to my popular podcast series in collaboration with TIPIAC (Teaching Indigenous Perspectives in the Australian Curriculum) series, ‘Blak Voices: Shared Path’.

Lastly, check out Zeyawgub's online shop for my quality art pieces that are ideal for your home or office, or contact me if you have a corporate project in mind.

'The Torres Strait Islander workshop was super engaging and Deb really knew her stuff. Deb kept things interactive, which made it enjoyable and valuable for everyone there. Zeyawgub Artworks

'I have just received my 2 stunningly beautiful pieces of art from Zeyawgub, being Kawra (Nautilus) & Withi (Coral Trout). I paid the extra & had both printed in A3 on beautiful art rag paper & it was definitely worth it. I was going to put them in a couple of frames from Kmart. But after seeing the high quality of these prints in person I’m going to invest in having them professionally framed to preserve them. I have now ordered 3 more prints Zaber (Garfish), Manta Ray & Sting Ray…& looking at adding Womer (Frigate Bird). From date of completing the order to delivery by Aust Post was 5 business days….& that’s to Thursday Island. Art was wrapped well & protected, arriving in excellent condition', Brian from Thursday Island.
