The piece, Makar, shows the beautiful turquoise waters of the Torres Strait region. The area is a pristine, natural wonder where Australia’s Indigenous People of the Zenadth Kes live. Here traditional culture is practised every day. Makar, is model boat racing and is a favourite past time of both Islander children and adults. The model lugger boats are adapted as outriggers and are well constructed and intricately decorated. When the wind and tides are right, Islanders head to the waters to race their boats against each other.
Deb created the piece to show her people’s attention to detail and care when constructing cultural objects. She designed the artwork to match the beautiful environment of the Torres Strait, and in memory of the many Cultural Festivals on Waibene (Thursday Island), where she loved watching the Makar competitions. The lower border of the work is decorated in Deb’s signature ‘Island Style’.
Measuring 297mm x 420mm and printed using pigment ink on high resolution, cotton art quality paper, this art piece is an absolute standout. This artwork is presented under white mount board and sealed in plastic packaging. All pieces come with artist statement and Supply Nation certification.
